Josefa Crosby Sewall Backus – Artist Bio
(1875-1959)
Josefa Backus was born in Brooklyn, NY. A well-trained and gifted artist, and world traveler, she painted works of London, the Pacific, New York, Mexico, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.
She was a member of the Washington Society of Artists and the Union des Feemes Peintres et Sculpteurs in Paris.
Her work was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC; the Argent Gallery, NYC 1938; the Washington Society of Artists 1939; the Society of Independent Artists; the University of Virginia; The York Gallery, Arlington, Virginia; Paris, France; and Majorca, Spain 1930.
